Why MARIO

From knowing more to doing better

Relationship-led support, built on data schools can trust.

Too many students feel unseen, unheard, or unsupported, and too many schools have the data to know it but no clear way to act on it. MARIO closes that gap.

Prevent & respond

A system for the moments schools cannot afford to miss

Built to help schools prevent and respond. MARIO helps schools notice concerns earlier, strengthen trusted adult relationships, and respond more systematically when student wellbeing or safety concerns emerge.

Prevent

  • Notice concerns earlier through regular check-ins and student voice
  • Strengthen trusted adult relationships before problems escalate
  • Surface safety and safeguarding signals students rarely say aloud
  • See emerging patterns across grades and groups, not just one-off flags

Respond

  • Run post-incident check-ins after a suicide, bullying, or student-safety event
  • Identify who needs follow-up, including students who are quietly struggling
  • Coordinate which trusted adult owns each conversation and next step
  • Give leaders a system-wide picture of community wellbeing after a crisis

When something happens, schools need to know who needs support

After a serious incident, schools need more than concern. They need a system. MARIO gives schools a structured way to check in, identify concerns, hold meaningful conversations, and coordinate next steps. Safeguarding is the foundation: a regular, low-barrier way for students to signal safety concerns, and for trusted adults to notice and act earlier.

A powerful student insight and follow-up system that helps schools prevent and respond. It is not an emergency or crisis service.

More than a dashboard

Powerful dashboards, and a system that turns insight into action

MARIO gives schools clear student and staff signal data. The real value is what happens next: our professional learning, 1:1 conversation model, and school-success support help educators move from insight to action without adding unnecessary workload.

Clear dashboards

School-wide insight into wellbeing, safety, and learning, with signals surfaced where adults can see them.

Evidence-based conversations

The data leads into prepared, structured 1:1 conversations grounded in a NASEN-published evidence base.

Coordinated follow-through

Owned next steps across teachers, counselors, and leaders, so insight becomes timely support, not just a report.

The MARIO Approach

One repeatable habit, grounded in evidence

Where it came from

MARIO began in a classroom. Co-founder Philip Bowman, then a learning-support educator at International School Bangkok, saw that some of the most important moments in school happened when students felt truly known by a trusted adult. In 2015, he began shaping those moments into the MARIO Approach: a research-based, repeatable structure for 1:1 conversations that help students reflect, self-advocate, and take meaningful next steps.

What the evidence shows

In a six-year retrospective study co-authored with Dr. Katie Novak and published by NASEN, the MARIO Approach measured a Cohen’s d of 0.91, placing it in the top 5% of educational interventions. See the evidence & research →

The MARIO 1:1 Conversation

A short, structured routine — about 5–7 minutes — that any educator can hold, built around four key phases:

1
Connect. Build the relationship and check in on how the student is really doing.
2
Identify. Agree the focus together and spot the key learning opportunity.
3
Activate. Bring in a high-impact teaching strategy in the moment.
4
Empower. Help the student commit to a next step and take ownership of it.

Why meaningful conversations matter

Relationships are the intervention

Decades of research point to the same thing: a strong relationship with a trusted adult is one of the most powerful predictors of a student’s wellbeing, safety, and learning. Tools don’t build those relationships. People do.

MARIO makes the relationship the point. Instead of one more dashboard, it gives every student a regular, low-barrier way to be heard, and gives staff the insight and structure to turn that into a conversation that matters, consistently and for every student, not just the ones who speak up.

In schools, culture can act as a blocker or as a catalyst. Research indicates that stronger student-teacher relationships play a major role in developing and sustaining a positive school culture. MARIO 1:1 conversations, in addition to supporting and improving student wellbeing, are therefore key in the growth of a caring, can-do culture.

Why schools choose MARIO

They want to do more than track wellbeing, safety, and support.
They want to improve it.

Most tools stop at measurement. Schools choose MARIO because it closes the loop, connecting student voice to prepared conversations and coordinated follow-through, so wellbeing, safety, and support actually move.

Schools stay with MARIO because the work becomes part of how they support students, not just another tool they log into.

97%+
school retention

Long-term partnerships reflect the depth of implementation, school-success support, and the value schools continue to see over time.

Trust by design

Built for schools that take student data seriously

Strong privacy, security, and clear ownership of student data are built in, not bolted on.

  • GDPR, FERPA, COPPA, and HIPAA compliant
  • Region-specific data processing agreements
  • SSO supported and LTI compliant
  • Independent security review (Vanta) and PRIVO-supported privacy
  • School-owned data, always
  • Role-based access and secure implementation

Safeguarding

Strengthen safeguarding from the ground up

Safeguarding works best when concerns surface early and the right people act together. MARIO gives students a regular, low-barrier way to share how they’re really doing and gives staff the insight to notice what might otherwise be missed.

We’re deepening MARIO into a stronger dedicated safeguarding layer for schools, and we’d welcome a conversation about where it fits in yours.

“Early intervention is everything. If you address it when it first happens, you have better outcomes.”

Courtney Pierce, Admin — St. Andrews International School

MARIO is not an emergency or crisis service. If a student needs immediate wellbeing or safety support, they should talk to a trusted adult at school, a parent or guardian, or local emergency services.
